“How did you even get us in here tonight?” Nessa asked as we stepped into The Grove. It was one of the top restaurants in San Diego and it took reservations weeks in advance.
“I told them I was a veteran and that I’d just come home from overseas and wanted to surprise you—my wife—with a nice dinner. They bought it.”
Nessa blushed again for the third time since we’d left the house. She was wearing a little black dress with a pair of red heels that had her looking like a supermodel. Natasha had taken her out to pick them up, as she said she hadn’t packed anything fancy for her stay with us.
The simple fabric clung to her every perfect curve and had me practically drooling over myself as we waited for the hostess to come back. I knew damn well that every eye in the place was on Nessa—even the eyes of the guys who had their girls with them—and I didn’t care.
When I was back in the service I would have been jealous, but now I just felt like a million bucks having the most gorgeous girl in the room (and the world) standing at my side.
“So you’re a liar?” Nessa smiled. “That’s what you’re saying?”
“Only when it’s in my own best interest,” I replied.
“So how many girls have you lied to, to get them into bed?” she countered, a devilish smirk on her face. I could see the hostess approaching, so I went for broke with my response.
“Well, if you buy my bullshit tonight, I’ll round out at a nice even one hundred.”
Nessa opened her mouth and started to freak out, but the hostess stepped up to us with two menus in her hand.
“Right this way.”
“Thank you,” I said with a smile.
I followed her and felt Nessa’s hand against my back, then a sharp pinch as she dug her nails in. Rather than give her the response I knew she wanted I just kept walking, and when we reached our table, pulled her chair out for her like a real gentleman.
“Aw, I love that,” the hostess said. “Romance. You never see that anymore.” She turned to Nessa and whispered, “You’ve got a keeper there, girl.”
I couldn’t tell if Nessa was going to blush and smile or give me some of her infamous sass as I sat down in front of her.
“One hundred, huh?”
I ignored her and picked up the menu.
“You know, I hear they have great crab toast here—”
“Hey!” Nessa hissed, kicking me under the table. “One hundred!? Is that a joke or something!?”
“Yes,” I replied with a grin. “It is a joke. Now can you take a look at the menu and tell me what you want to eat?”
A look of obvious relief washed over Nessa’s face, but at the same time she scrunched up her nose at my teasing.
God, she’s adorable.
Of course the story about Nessa being my wife had been a lie, but at the same time, the sentiment wasn’t that far from the truth.
